Gerald (Gary) Stuart, Jr., 70, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2011 of Lewy Body Alzheimer’s.
Funeral services will be held at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home at 10 a.m., Monday, January 31, 2011, with visitation from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home for friends and family. Burial will be at Canfield Cemetery in rural Altoona, Iowa.
Gary was born in Carlisle, Iowa on January 4, 1941. He lived most of his life in Altoona and graduated from Altoona High School.
He joined the Navy in 1959 and served for 4 years. He joined the Des Moines Fire Department in 1972, and served as a medic until retirement in 1992. He later worked for Midwest Veterinary Supply for 12 years. His hobby was working his acreage.
He is survived by his wife, Saundra and two daughters, Laura (Todd) Hiatt of Murray, IA and Jennifer (Paul) Quick of Des Moines, IA; grandchildren, Jacob Quick, Rileigh, Colton and Drew Hiatt; three sisters, Melva Albaugh of Johnston, Cindy Stuart of Altoona, Patty (Burt) Smith of Altoona, two brothers; Ken (Rita) Stuart of Mitchellville and Roger (Bonnie) Stuart of Altoona. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Barbara Stuart.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ivy Centennial United Methodist Church.

Condolence to Gary Stuart family. You all are in our prayers. It has been many years since I have seen Gary. Went to school with Roger in Altoona. Worked with Gary at Des Moines Steel and rode together back and forth to work there. Then I was called back to John Deere and told Gary they were hiring welders and he applied on then was laid off from Deere and I knew he went to work for the Des Moines Fire department and never saw Gary again. I was fortunate to be an aquaintence of Gary, when I came to Des Moines in the mid 60's. He was,besides being a medic, delivered Oscar Mayer products to the Super Markets in Des moines. ALWAYS had that great smile. then fortunate enough to have met Sondra in Pleasant Hill. He will be remembered by many who were fortunate to have made contact with him. Sincerely Fred Deaver

Saundra,Laura and Jennifer: We are sorry to get word of Gary's passing, are sympathy is with you all and your families. Dear Saundra, Laura,Jenny and Family,
We were so saddened to hear of Garys passing. Saundra I am sure glad we got to see Gary at the school reunion.
We are in Arizona this winter and as I received the word of your loss many thoughts and memories come to mind. From being in school, being my neighbor, and friend and co-worker which went back many years ago.
Tiny and I had fun in school running around, working at White Way Service Station and being on the Des Moines Fire Department. We always had fun and loved ribbing one anohter. His humor helped many a situation.

I am very sorry to hear of Garys' passing. I worked with Gary at Midwest for several years. He always had a smart comment and a smile. All the customers always loved him. I can still see Gary riding the pallet jack through the warehouse a Midwest. My memories of Gary still bring a smile to my face! Gary will be missed by all!

Saundra, Laura,& Jenny, We are saddened to hear about Gary. Most of my memories
of Gary, occurred when I was very young. I remember going out to your farm and spending the night and having a really great time with the family. I will always remember Gary for his good sense of humor and his kidding around. A couple of years ago, we spent some time at your home. I enjoyed a good talk with Gary while the kids enjoyed the gold fish. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Gary and I had some differences in the beginning, but after a while we became good freinds! Best father in-law I could ever have!!! You will truely be missed!!!

Gerald and I worked together at station 8 and maybe some at station 5. He was a fine medic and I know he helped save many people's lives. He was great to have around the station, because he was always trying to start something funny and he was easy to work with because tried to support everyone in their duties. He and I had many discussions about many topics. He always brings a smile to my face for the above reasons. I am sorry. Frank Vivone

Uncle Gary and I shared a lot of good laughs together!! As a child I spent a fair amount of time on the farm and he taught this city boy how to appreciate the country. I will truly miss his unconditional understanding and acceptance of who I am what I am about! Love ya Uncle G.
