Betty Jean Wilson, 84, died peacefully Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at her residence, Wesley Acres, Des Moines, IA. Betty was born December 31, 1926, in Spirit Lake, IA to Lola and Russell Varner. She later moved to Des Moines where she met and married her husband of 63 years, Burt Wilson.

She worked for 25 years in the account and payroll department of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), now called DART. Betty was an active member of the Southgate Order of Eastern Star and also the Fort Des Moines United Methodist Church where she enjoyed maintaining the flower beds for many years. She also took great pride in her flowers at their home of many years.

Betty’s hobbies included golfing with Burt and traveling throughout the US and Europe. She was a lifetime achievement award winner in the “TOPS” organization. She spent countless hours chronicling her family history in word and photos. She was loved by friends and family and will be greatly missed.

Betty is survived by her husband Burt Wilson; brother, “Bud” (Barb) Varner of Hollandale, MN; sons, Mike (Glenda) Wilson of Dubuque, IA, and Jim Wilson of Des Moines, IA; six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Visitation will be, Friday, January 21, 2011, from 5-7 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, January 22, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the Fort Des Moines United Methodist Church, 6205 SW 9th Street, Des Moines, IA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be given to the Fort Des Moines United Methodist Church.
