Service Details

Stephen Edward “Steve” Modrick, 71, passed away on Monday, March 26, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center, in Des Moines. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at the Basilica of St John’s Catholic Church, 1915 University Avenue in Des Moines. Visitation will be from 4-7:00 p.m. Friday with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. Burial will be at the Highland Memory Gardens cemetery.
Steve was born and raised in Davenport, IA, attending Sacred Heart Cathedral School and St Ambrose High School. He was a graduate of the University of Iowa and veteran of the US Army. Returning to Iowa, he worked for the City of Des Moines for 30 years as an administrator of the Wastewater Reclamation Plant. He was an active member of the Basilica of St John’s, along with many professional organizations, including the Iowa Water Pollution Control Association and the Water Environment Federation. Steve was the founding member of the 5S society.
Steve is survived by his wife, Rita Ann (Hulsbrink), four sons: Steve (Lisa) of Des Moines, James (Angela) of Rockville, MD, Joseph (Lisa) of Iowa City, Tom (Leslie) of Loma, CO; daughter, Theresa (Matt) Carpenter of Poway, CA; his brother, John A. “Tony” (Eleanor) Modrick of Albuquerque, NM; and two sisters, Julitta A. and Cecelia Modrick of Bettendorf. Steve has 10 grandchildren (Bill and Dana Cook, Joshua, Alec, Samantha, Clayton, Emma, and Teddy Modrick, Mercedi and Aston Carpenter), and one great-grandchild, Ethan Miles.
