Virgil Eugene Smith was born September 17, 1960, to the union of Gerald Smith, Sr., and Margaret Harris Smith. He was one of five children born to this family.

Virgil was educated in the Des Moines school system. He was an employee of Spaghetti Works before he became self-employed. He loved blues music and collecting antiques. He was known throughout the community as the proprietor of Poor Boy’s Hauling Services. With a heart of love, Virgil provided housing for homeless individuals across the city. He certainly was a big man with a big heart.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Smith, Sr.; his brother, Lonnie Smith; his grandmother, Mother Virgie Rivers; his grandmother, Clara Bell Cavil; and his uncle, Ronnie Brewer. He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Margaret Smith; his brother, Gerald Smith, Jr.; his brother, Bobby Smith; his only sister, Clarice (Sammie) Kemp; his aunt, Sister Barbara Roland; his aunt, Lottie Arnold; his uncle, Reverend Billie (Jodie) Smith; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends.
