Service Details
Mary Ann Olsen, 89, passed away January 8, 2011, at Calvin Community in Des Moines. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, January 15, 2011,at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Mary Ann was born October 13, 1921, in Manly, Iowa to Orin and Mary Ann Knutson and grew up in Kensett, Iowa. She married George A. Olsen in 1942. After graduating from AIB in Des Moines, she worked briefly as a secretary. She then spent many years raising her children at home. When she returned to work, Mary Ann was a bookkeeper for Lutheran Social Services of Iowa until her retirement in 1985. Mary Ann and George were very active members of Central Lutheran Church and Capitol Hill Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing bridge and loved attending her grandchildren’s recitals, games, and concerts.
Mary Ann is survived by her daughter, Mary Ellen (Mark) Henderson; grandchildren, Joy and Isaac Olsen of Des Moines, and Eric, Mandy, and Lauren Henderson of Minneapolis, MN; brother, Orin Irwin (Aida) Knutson of Schertz, TX; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George A. Olsen; son, Marc Olsen; brother, Maurice Knutson; and sister, Beverly (Knutson) Stoops.
Memorial contributions may be made to Capitol Hill Lutheran Church or the American Diabetes Association.

I was fortunate to experience childhood with Mary Ann as a neighbor. Throughout the years, Mary Anns kindheartedness and generosity was never lost on my brother, mother, and me. It was a privilege to know her, and a blessing to have grown-up in the shadow of her example. Mary Ann was indeed the epitome of a good neighbor. I will maintain fond memories of her for the remainder of my life.

I worked with Mary Ann at Lutheran Social Service. We played bridge on every break and lunch hour. She was a great person and I know that she will be missed.

I met your Mother and Father when Central and First Lutheran joined together and became Capitol Hill. I wish to extend my Sympathy and prayers for you all at this time. I will not be able to attend the memorial service as I am in Kansas City Missouri.
