Robert D. "Bob" Jones

Robert D. “Bob” Jones, 85, passed away December 25, 2010, at Bright Kavanagh House surrounded by several family members.

Bob was born February 20, 1925, during a terrible snow storm at a farm home in Kossuth County, Iowa. He was previously married and to this union two sons, Rex Michael and Robert “Bobby” were born. On October 24, 1942 he entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Philippines and Pacific Ocean. He was discharged February 29, 1946. On September 16, 1967 Bob was married in Omaha, Nebraska to Annabelle K. Brown. To this marriage a son, Jeffrey Robert, was born.

After retiring from John Deere, he spent his time volunteering at Living History Farms, Lutheran Hospital, Methodist Hospital, Mercy Hospital, and the Blood Center of Central Iowa. There he worked 23 years and had put in 21,000 volunteer hours.

Bob is survived by his wife, Annabelle; sister, Viola Adams; sons; and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey; parents, Robert M. and Pearl Grace Jones.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 29, 2010, at Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, 2747 E. Madison Avenue, Des Moines. Burial will be at Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VFW Post #9662 or Staves Memorial United Methodist Church.
