Gene William Cochran, Sr., 67, departed this life December 20, 2010, at Genesis Senior Living Center.

Gene arrived in this life April 30, 1943, in Columbia, MO the only son to Robert and Mattie Cochran. He graduated from East High School in 1961. Gene served in the U.S. Army 1st Battalion 14th Infantry during the Vietnam War. He earned the rank of SP/4 Marksman and was honored with the Vietnam Service Medal, Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He worked for many years as a self employed contractor specializing in everything from carpentry to painting to mechanics. He will be fondly remembered as a “jack of all trades and a master of many.” Gene enjoyed fishing, hunting, collecting antiques, traveling, gardening and spending time with his wife and enjoying her cooking. Gene was baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit on January 30, 2007, under the ministry of Presiding Bishop Jeremiah Reed. Gene touched the lives of everyone he met.

Those left to cherish his memory are, his wife of 23 years, Janice Marie Burrell Cochran. Gene was blessed with three children, Shawnette, Gene Jr. and Darron Cochran all of Dayton, OH, 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; sisters, Josephine Shelton, Marjorie (Eric) Parker, Ethel (Richard) Anderson and Jane (Vernon) Johnson; and a host of other extended relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 27, 2010, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. Monday at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Drive, Van Meter, IA.
