Jack Monahan

December 16, 2010

Service Details

Surrounded by loving family, Jack D. Monahan passed peacefully Thursday, December 16, 2010, at Mercy Hospice-Johnston.

He was born March 10, 1934. Jack was the first child of the late Ethel (Wishman) and Elmer Monahan. He lived all 76 years of his life in Des Moines where he met and married Darleen Peck in 1953.

Jack had a variety of talents and hobbies which he shared with family and friends. As a skilled woodworker, he built kitchen cabinets and decks as well as crafting a cradle and rocking horse for his grandchildren, for example. We always lived in "the house that Jack built". He could figure out how to fix cars, small motors and gadgets and would help others repair things, too, always up for a challenge. Upon his retirement as a proud semi-truck driver, he was excited to build and fly an Ultra-lite airplane. Jack was a hard-worker, rarely missing a day and a role model for his children through his honesty and integrity. All will miss his strong character and dependability.

Treasuring his memory are Darleen and their children, Sue and Mike Blair, Rick and Cheri Monahan, Shari and Steve Senn, Ron and Cindy Monahan. His grandchildren, Sean and Shani (Dave Backstrom) Blair; Jade, Lochland, and Honor Monahan; Eric, Christopher, and Amanda Senn; Bailey, Mitchel, Skylar, and Amy Monahan; and great-grandson, Chase Senn.

Jack is survived by his siblings, Donald (Carole) Monahan, Shirley (Jerry) Dowell, Sharon (John) Zigo, Bobbie (Dick) Wallsmith, Elmer Dean (Judy) Monahan, Ward (Janet) Leete and Peggy Ann; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
