Service Details

Jean E. Dunning, 94, passed away peacefully in her home December 7, 2010. A memorial visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, December 12, 2010, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. A service will be at a later date at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. She will be laid to rest beside her husband of 41 years, Col. C.H. “Jack” Dunning.

Jean was born February 9, 1916, in Carlisle, Illinois to Grace and Malcolm Todd. She married her high school love after they both finished college. She taught first grade for two years before their marriage on October 12, 1940. In her 30-year career as a military wife, they lived in Japan, Puerto Rico, and all over the U.S., moving every three years. Their last station was in Des Moines, Iowa. Jean was very proud to be a wife to a military man who served his country in the U.S. Army. She was also very active in the Army communities and at some stations helped with the Red Cross.

Her faith was Presbyterian. She was also a member of Chapter MA P.E.O. in Des Moines. Her last 20 years were spent in Des Moines surrounded by loved ones.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Jaquelyn S. Dunning and companion, Fred Allen; son, Todd A. (Kathy) Dunning; daughter-in-law, Pat Dunning; grandchildren, Kim (John) O’Reilly, Todd (Deb) Bordenaro, Paul (Nina) Dunning, and Chris Bordenaro; great-grandchildren, Nick Bordenaro, Violet Bordenaro, Grace Bordenaro, Stan Dunning, Nick Dunning, Tess O’Reilly, and Forrest O’Reilly; brother, Bill Todd of Long Beach, CA; and four nieces and two nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Jean will be missed by all her family and friends.
