Domingo “Z” Zavalla, 53, passed away December 6, 2010, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center after a brief struggle with renal failure and complications from diabetes.

The family will greet friends between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 9, 2010 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, in West Des Moines. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, December 10, 2010 at 10:00 a.m.

“Z” or “Dody”, as his family referred to him, was born March 9, 1957 to Angelica and Arcadio Zavallain in Manila, Philippines. He immigrated to Des Moines with his family when he was 10 years old. “Z” graduated from Lincoln High School in 1975. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 15 years. His passion for cars drove him to new employment, and for the last 8 years, “Z” worked for Karl Chevrolet in Ankeny as a Parts Salesman. This allowed him to share his passion for cars with other automobile enthusiasts. “Z” was a proud owner of a 1972 Classic Camaro, and often “Z” and his wife could be found at car shows in the surrounding area. Recently, “Z” won his division at the Madrid Labor Day Car Show. He also enjoyed traveling to NASCAR races which included the Pepsi 400, Brickyard and Bristol. His other passions and hobbies included spending time with his family, drawing, riding and working on his custom chopper, cooking and watching football and basketball.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Lurae; daughter, Ashley, granddaughter (to be) A.J.; mother, Angie Zavalla of Melbourne, FL; brother, Andy (Eina) of Melbourne, FL; sisters, Sandi Zavalla-Bowen of Norwalk, IA and Gina (Scott) Burzacott of Pleasant Hill, IA; nieces and nephews, Melanie Cox, Jay DuBois, Matt Burzacott, Ben Burzacott, Andrea Zavalla; and a host of other family and friends. He also leaves behind his dogs, Cammie and Kodiak. He was preceded in death by his father, Arcadio.
