Service Details
Richard Angelo Righi, 82, passed away on Friday, November 12, 2010. Services will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 11:00 AM with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery. Casual dress appropriate because he loved to wear his jeans.
Richard was born in Carney, IA to Louis and Beatrice Righi. He graduated from Woodside High School, was drafted on November 10, 1950 and served as an army corporal in the Korean War. He retired from Wright Printing in July of 1993 and was a member of St. Ambrose Cathedral and VFW Post 9662.
He was the WII Bowling champion in competition with Nina, John and Irene. He loved Polish poker, golf, sports (especially IA and ISU football, loved tinkering with cars and was very mechanical. His garden was a joy and he specialized in tomato plants. Grandkid activities were of top priority.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lenora; daughter LeAnn (Charles) Phillips; sons, Doug (Linda) and Tim (Angie); grandchildren; Michael Terpstra, Stephanie Phillips, Luigi, Annie, Bailey, and Sydney Righi; his sister, Lena Contri; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debra; his parents; his brother Don and his sister Mary.

We are so thankful that we had Richard as our beloved brother-in-law for 58 years. He has been like a brother and father to us always loving, caring, and available for advice. Richard, Lenora and their kids, LeAnn, Doug, and Tim always wanted to include us in every special time such Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and helping celebrate his birthday on July 4th. Richard taught us to drive using his own car! We have wonderful memories of his humor and playfulness in swimming and bocce ball. He even showed us his unique way to hold a golf club cross handed to get a better swing and it worked! We will always remember our "brother", Richard Righi, and carry our love for him in our hearts. We know Richard will be watching over his family. In Loving Memory to you, Richard.

I remember the North High band trip to Hawaii and Mr & Mrs Righi served as our chaperone. Our group went to see Frankie Avalon perform and Mr Righi asked "from one Italian to another, would it be possible for us to meet Mr. Avalon after the performance." Frankie agreed and we went back stage after the performance, talked with him and had our pictures taken.

I will always remember Rich playing Wii bowling at Walnut Ridge in Clive. He was always helpful when others were playing the game. He always knew how to raz my dad, John Woolway and their friend, Nina. Thursday afternoons will not be the same but I know in my heart he will still be there watching over his bowling friends.
