Roger Gene Conrath
November 09, 2010
Roger G. Conrath, 74, died Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at his home following a long illness.
Roger was born in Des Moines on September 8, 1936, to Audley and Doris Conrath. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1954 and shortly thereafter began his 40 year career as an award winning brick and stone mason, retiring from Forrest and Associates. Following his retirement, he taught masonry school through the Des Moines Bricklayers Union No. 2.
He married Barbara Queener, his wife of 54 years, on April 27, 1956. They lived in Des Moines until relocating to their acreage north of Bondurant 36 years ago, where they raised their two sons, John and Frank.
Roger enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening (he had ribbon winning entries in the Iowa State Fair), and was an all around outdoorsman. He had many, many friends and never met a stranger. He enjoyed going to flea markets and loved family gatherings.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; one son, John; a daughter-in-law, Janet of Greenville, NC; one sister, Carol Winget of Des Moines; three brothers, Larry (Mary) and Audley (Sharon) of Des Moines, and Jim (Carolyn) of Waukee; along with many nieces and nephews who loved their “Uncle Roger,” and his special “grandson,” Brock Grubbs. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his son, Frank.
The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, November 11, 2010 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue. Services will be held on Friday, November 12, 2010, at 10 a.m. with cremation to follow.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family in Roger’s name.
