John Japhet
November 05, 2010
John Dale Japhet “JJ”, 82, passed away Friday, November 5, 2010, at home, under the care of Hospice. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 8, 2010, at Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, E. 28th and Madison with burial to follow at Masonic Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family at the church starting at 9:30 a.m. Monday, November 8.
John, a life long resident of Des Moines, was born June 17, 1928, to Myrtle and Walter Japhet. He was a WWII Navy veteran serving in the Pacific. He was active in Shrine, Consistory, Eastern Star, and was a 33 Degree Mason.
He retired from the Baker Group in 1993 but continued working at Hy Vee “for fun” until July 2010. An avid Hawkeye fan, he organized yearly bus trips to a U of I football game. He also cheered the Hawks to victory at numerous bowl games. When he wasn’t cheering for the Hawks he was active in AAU basketball and at East High School where he received a Humanitarian Award. He was always happiest when giving something to someone else or doing something for someone else.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris; three daughters: Joy Lynn, Kim Japhet of Des Moines, IA, and Kristi Japhet (Darin Rutherford) of Janesville, WI; and four grandchildren: Kristine Weaver (David), Brenna, Mikayla, and Andrew.
Memorial contributions can be made to Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, Blank Children’s Hospital, Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, or Taylor House Hospice.

We sure were sorry to hear of the death of John.
He was a good friend for many years beginning back at East High School.
I know that he was later honored by receiving the 33rd degree from the Masonic Lodge and I believe in particular his work at the Consistory.
He had many, many, good friends who got to know him over the years.
John will be missed by all!
Sincerely,
Russ and Lucile Johnson
