Mr. Shashikant M. Sankalia, 74, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2007 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. A visitation will be held Sunday, March 25, 2007 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens with cremation immediately following.
Mr. Sankalia was born December 19, 1932 in Surat, India to Manubhai and Dhansukben Sankalia. He received his B.Sc. (Tech.), his M.S., and M.B.A. in India, Canada, and the United States. Upon completing his studies, he married Nirupama B. Shah on February 5, 1968 in Mumbai, India. Soon after, they immigrated to the United States.
He was a self-made man. He worked initially in Atul, India and Canada. Upon moving to New York City/New Jersey after his marriage, he became an international banker with Chemical Bank, and later with Wardley Limited. His career took him to Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong. After retiring, he and his wife returned home to Surat, India.
Mr. Sankalia enjoyed being with family and friends, reading, traveling, studying, listening to jazz and Indian classical music, photography, and watching cricket and tennis matches on T.V.
He is survived by his beloved daughters: Kanan (Myles) Kappelman of West Des Moines, Iowa and Rupal S. Sankalia of New York City, New York; his sisters: Nirmala J. Jhaveri of Surat, India, Shalini U. Marfatia of Surat, India, and Malini B. Panchal of Mumbai, India; and many other loving family members including sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, in-laws and friends in Surat and Mumbai, India, Texas, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. He was preceded in death by his wife Nirupama S. Sankalia; his father and mother Manubhai and Dhansukhben Sankalia; and three brothers, Suryakant M., Kishore M., and Padmakant M. Sankalia.
