Robert Douglas (Doug) Bishop, 59, passed away on October 11, 2010, of injuries sustained after being struck by a car in Taipei, Taiwan, where he taught at the Taipei American School. Doug was born August 3, 1950 in Des Moines, Iowa to Robert and Peggy Crowder Bishop. He graduated from East High School and furthered his learning at the University of Northern Iowa in education and later at Emerson College in Boston, where he earned his MA in Theater Studies.

Doug’s teaching career of 37 years included LeGrand, Iowa; Berlin, West Germany; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Taipei, Taiwan. He taught English for many years, but drama became his real passion. Doug was one of the original founders of ISTA (International Schools Theater Association) and was a member of the current board. His love of teaching and commitment to his students has touched the lives, not only of generations of students, but also his fellow teachers, educational communities, many friends, and family.

Doug was previously married to Julie Dotterer. He leaves behind his dearly loved daughters, Sophie and Caitlin Bishop; his parents, Robert and Peggy Bishop; sisters, Nancy Montague (Bill) and Kathy Fedson; brother, David Bishop (Dawn); nieces Lisa Bishop, Melissa Fedson, and Emma Montague; nephews Michael Fedson and Wyatt Montague and great-nephew Alex Bishop. Others left to grieve are many loving relatives, including the entire Dotterer family and Doug’s many friends. He was preceded in death by his niece, Amy Fedson and nephew, Matthew Bishop.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at Oakwood Methodist Church, 400 N.E. 56th Street, Pleasant Hill at 2:00 p.m. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to the family for the benefit of the girls or for a charity which they will designate at a later date.
