Service Details

Kirk Shie Foudree, a Des Moines attorney, has died at his home; he was 58. A native of Iowa, he earned both a Bachelor of Arts degree and a law degree from Drake University. After law school, he worked as an Assistant Polk County Attorney. Details on the cause of death were unavailable.

“Kirk was one of the smartest people I’ve ever known, and as a lawyer he relished jury trials,” said his brother, Bruce. “He was always ready to lend a hand to help people.”

Kirk was active in his family’s food concessions business and helped run its operations at the Iowa State Fair as well as Drake University, Iowa State University, and various swimming pools in Des Moines. When he wasn’t working, he loved good food and cooking for family and friends.

He had an outgoing personality and was always ready with a story or joke to make you laugh. But this often hid his serious-thinker side. His interests were far-ranging and included science, travel, antiques, and rare books which he collected.

His fascination with science showed up at a young age when he and a classmate spent many days in a mock space capsule he designed and built as a junior high school science experiment to study the effects of living in a sealed environment. The event and the astronauts’ successful “return” were covered by the local media.

Kirk is survived by his brother, Bruce Foudree, and two children, Aaron and Nicole.

Friends are invited to join the family at an informal memorial gathering for Kirk at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines, on Sunday, November 7, 2010, from 1-3 p.m.
