Rick Leth, 52, died Saturday, October 2, 2010, at his home in Des Moines. He was born September 5, 1958, in Des Moines, Iowa.
Rick graduated from the University of Iowa medical school. As a pain management specialist, he brought comfort to thousands in chronic pain not only physically but emotionally.
Rick will be remembered for the way he connected with people. Nobody was a stranger to Rick – he was a friend to all. Rick had an innate ability to perceive what others needed and was there for them. His compassion for others’ happiness was felt by many.
Rick is survived by his daughter, Nicole Leth; brothers, Ross (Jonna) and Rob (Marlys) Leth; life-long friend, Annette; nephews, Andy (K.T.) and Jonathon Leth; niece, Aliyah Leth and loving dog, Watson.
A memorial service will be 6:00 p.m., Thursday, October 7, 2010, at Windsor United Methodist Church, 6222 University Ave, Des Moines. Friends may visit with family from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., Thursday, October 7, 2010 at the Church.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Alcoholics Anonymous, Broadlawns Medical Center, or the Animal Rescue League in loving memory of Richard J. “Rick” Leth.

I just heard of Dr. Leth's passing as I was a patient many years ago who he showed true compassion and gave relief when many others could not. May he rest in peace with our Heavenly Father.

Rick,
I am so sad to hear this. I spent a lot of time with you, "Netty-Sue" and Greg Stolze (my boyfriend at the time) when we were oh-so-young. You are a beautiful soul...I hope your poetry is still around for others to see. You were kind, sensitive and loving. God Bless You, Rick. You will be missed by many!

Rick was a very sweet guy. I can't imagine what brought him to this moment, but I'm sad for it. He had a great smile & seemed like he really enjoyed life. I hope he has found peace!

I was deeply saddened by the news of Rick passing away. Although I never got to know Rick personally, he seemed to be at every AA meeting I attended early in my sobriety. Rick's words were always meaningfull to me and I felt like he was talking directly to me. Rick was a reason why I "kept coming back" early on in my program. I will miss his thoughts on how AA works.
