William L. (Bill) White Sr., 86, expired Sunday, August 29, 2010 at 10:35pm here. He waged a tremendous battle against a terminal foe.

Born here on March 21st, 1924, he lovingly watched after us. His beloved wife, Doris of 55 years and his daughter, Doreen preceded him in death. His sons, Billy, Dale and Michael survive him.

Additionally father admired and loved his 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. As well as other numerous family members, friends and acquaintances.

Active in his community, he was a friend to all. A quarter-miler of note on the East High Scarlet Track Team. (On of the fastest teams nationally then.)

A World War II veteran. He achieved a marksman status. Father worked at the Des Moines Meat Packing House. He also promoted local music concerts and was a bartender. Also a construction worker, he remodeled every inch of our family home. He carried mail for the United States Postal Service.

Graduating from Drake University. He was an official at the Drake Relays for many years. Dad became a agriculture specialist for the Federal Government. He went to all 99 counties in Iowa numerous times to help the farmers.

He was president of the Woodland baseball little league. Dad belonged to the Royal Dukes (Social Club), also the Monarchs. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He was a huge Kansas City Chief Football Fan.

A staunch Democrat, a high light of his life was to speak to First Lady Michelle Obama. A member of St. Paul AME Church. He belonged to the Saturday morning breakfast club. He truly enjoyed life.

We will miss him greatly. A truly great guy, who just fell asleep in death. A gentle warrior. No Doubt!

His spirit has ascended back to Jehovah God. When he awakes from his sleep, he will be in paradise. We hope to see him there….

There will be a visitation from 9:30 to 10:30 am Saturday, September 4, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. An 11 am Saturday graveside will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pastor Frederick Gaddy, St. Paul AME, will preside.
