Marie Fontana, 83, died Saturday, August 21, 2010 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. She was born March 24, 1927 in Des Moines to Retta and Thomas Cunconan.
She loved a good time with family and friends, cooking, dancing, and spending time with her grandchildren. Marie was a member of two card clubs where she had a special group of friends that she enjoyed playing cards with throughout the years.
Marie is survived by her children, Sheri (Bud) Runyon, Vicki (Ron) May, Connie Bowman, Rick (Laurie) Fontana, and Mike (Rhonda Perry) Fontana; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and eight step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Arthur J. Fontana; her parents; 3 brothers, Everett, Homer, and Edmund Cunconan; and a sister, Opal Ball.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at All Saints Catholic Church, 650 NE 52nd Avenue, Des Moines, with burial at Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may visit with family from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, August 23, 2010 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.
Memorial Contributions may be made to All Saints Catholic Church, Mercy Hospice in Johnston, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in loving memory of Marie.

Aunt Marie was always quick with a smile and a sweet little laugh. The door to her and Uncle Joe's home was always graciously open. My last memory together with her was eating tomato sandwiches and cottage cheese, looking through pictures and sharing stories. Although living in Arizona has meant less Iowa family time together, the love has and will always linger.
My deepest sympathy and love to all of you.

I will never forget all of the holidays and family visits. They were always special times. Marie was a fantastic cook, and her lasagna was wonderful! I loved her sense of humor. I have many heartfelt memories with Joe & Marie and all my cousins.

Aunt Marie & Uncle Joe were my God Parents. Time and miles might have distanced us thru the years, but they were always close in thought and in my heart. I always enjoyed hearing Aunt Marie's sweet voice and loved to hear her laugh. I remember my Dad popping in and saying" Let's go to Tama!", and off they'd all go.
My deepest sympathy and prayers are with everyone in the family at this time.
