Service Details
James Lester Collins, 72, passed away at the home of his son in Cambridge August 13, 2010 surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
James was born November 25, 1937 in Des Moines, Iowa to Christina and James Collins. James served in the US Air Force. He was a Police Officer in Des Moines for many years until he retired. James was a member of Home Masonic Lodge, Za Ga Zig Shrine, the Iowa State Police Association and the Iowa Association of Chief’s of Police. He loved being with his family. James enjoyed gardening, genealogy, Sunday dinners with Michael, traveling with his sister, and bird watching.
James is survived by his son, Michael (Jody) Collins; his grandchildren, Nacia and Nathan; his sister, Dorothy (Richard) Tharp, his brother, Robert (Rosemary) Collins; many nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by his son, Jerome and his parents.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Home Masonic Lodge.

Gone but not Forgotten

It was my privledge and pleasure to have Jim as a neighbor for a number of years. He was a gentleman who was proud of his son and daughter-in-law as well as his grandkids who he thought the world of. I will miss our over the fence talks discussing the ways to make the world a better place. The squirrels and birds will miss his presence in making sure they had food. He enjoyed being able to get that special squirrel up to the deck and feed him by hand. Again, he will be missed by many.
