Barbara J. Evans, 84, died Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at Mitchellville Care Center in Mitchellville, Iowa. She was born July 3, 1926 in Inglewood, California, to James and Eleanor Brown.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Altoona United Methodist Church. Barbara loved spending time with her family, softball, being a part of the Altoona Kitchen Band, the ocean, and attending her annual class reunions.
Barbara is survived by her sons, Dean (Patti) Evans and Dennis (Marilyn) Evans; daughter, Heidi (Michael) Lambert; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William; daughter, Vicki Wheeler; and son, Vance Evans.
A celebration of life visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, August 16, 2010 at Altoona United Methodist Church in Altoona.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and Parkinson’s Disease Foundation in loving memory of Barbara

Your mother was a terrific neighbor. How blessed we were to have had her living across the street from us for 20 years! We witnessed the death of her soldier son, illness and death of husband followed by her daughter. Through it all she was calm and gracious. "Strength and dignity were her clothing...and her speech was ruled by kindness..."
Most of all, she was proud of you, Dean, Dennis and Heidi - and of your acommplishments. God bless and comfort you in your time of sorrow.

It was a blessing to be your neighbor, smiling I remember a couple of neighborhood Christmas parties at your house, as well as other good childhood memories. My prayers are for the God of all comfort to comfort you today.

Dear Dean,Dennis and Heidi, Your mom was so special! I'm glad she was our aunt. She always had a smile and a little laugh. I remember having Thanksgiving dinners downstairs in your basement on the ping-pong table so everyone would fit. Your mom was a good cook.She introduced us to homemade tacos. I loved her Christmas cards in recent years. Her sense of humor came through especially the one with her on the motorcycle. I'm sure that Uncle Bill, Vicki and Vance have welcomed her into heaven.
