Michael “Scorno” Vacco, 57, died Monday, August 9, 2010 at Kavanagh on 56th Street. A mass of Christian burial will be 10 AM Friday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with burial following at Glendale Cemetery. A visitation will be from 4-8 PM Thursday at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home with a Rosary at 7:30 PM.
Mike was born September 25, 1952 to Roscoe and Anne Marie Vacco. He attended St. Anthony’s grade school where he received the John F. Kennedy Award. He graduated from Dowling High School where he participated in many sports and attended the University of Northern Iowa. In 1973, Mike opened Scornovacca’s Italian Ristorante and was a successful business man for 37 years. He was a member of St Anthony’s Catholic Church and the Society of Italian Americans.
Mike is survived by his daughter, Michelle (Nathan) Huber; son, Brandon Vacco; parents, Roscoe and Anne Marie Vacco; siblings, Marty Vacco, Valerie (Anthony) Rolando, Victor Vacco, Rocco Vacco, Rory (Betsy) Vacco, Lisa Vacco, Lori (Gerald) Patton, Frankie Vacco, Johnny (Quinby) Vacco, Amy Vacco and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Brandon Vacco Education Fund.

So terribly worry about Mike. We were only around Mike a few times, but really thought a lot of him and the great father he was to Brandon. He will be missed.

To the Vacco family,
I am sorry to hear about Mike. When I visited Mike at his
restaurant we talked about business but he always mentioned his
family members and his concern for you.
Mike will be missed but I will always remember him as a
successful businessman. Along with his family members they made
Scornovaccos a landmark on the southside.
And to Mike from me, " God Bless You ".

We cannot put into words the sense of loss you all must be going through at this sad time. But, knowing the great spirit and love for his family that Mike had throughout his time with us, we believe he wants peace for all of his family and his friends. Nobody can ever accuse Mike of failing to live an inspired, full and caring life.
We feel honored to have known Mike for so many years and to be able to call him our friend.

This message is for Brandon. I am Jamie's cousin from Colorado. Brandon, although we met only a few times, and you were very young, what I do remember about your dad is how much he loved you. I recall a family wedding in Waukon. You were just a little guy and your dad carried you around, showing you off to everyone. He was so proud of you, and still is. His passing was and is very difficult for the Jenkins side. He represented hope and strength, which are qualities I am certain he has now passed on to you. Remember the times you had together and keep them close in your memories as you adjust in this difficult time and remember the strength he had for you and your mom. I know your dad is very proud of you and I am so sorry for your loss. Leslie.

To Mike's family, we were so very sorry to hear of your loss. My husband and I have always enjoyed dining at Scornovacca's - the friendly, family atmosphere - Mike always made you feel so very welcome. We wondered why we hadn't seen him the last few times we dined, and now we know. He will be greatly missed. You have our most sincere sympathy.

I am so very sorry for the loss of your Mike. My memories of him go back to the little league baseball games, where my mom and dad and all of us kids, would gather with Roscoe and Anne Marie and their kids, to watch my brother Pete,and your Marty and Mike play. We all had so much fun. Anne Marie always had a few choice words for the umpires. Roscoe was a great coach.

I am so very sorry to hear about Mike. He was always a very sweet and nice man and so very glad we were friends. He was one of the only 2 italian men I went out with in high school. Such a gentleman. You will be missed very much. My prayers are with your family and friends.
