Service Details

Bette Lee Hunter-Cockerham went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday August 4, 2010 at the age of 86.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 7, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue. Visitation will be held from Friday 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Born Bette Lee Grosvenor on June 22, 1924 in Colfax, Iowa to Edward and Bessie (Kelley) Grosvenor she was the fourth child of five. She grew up on the family farm and attended school in Colfax. She married Donald Hunter in 1940 and had two sons, David and Gary. She was a homemaker for most of her life living in Iowa and for a short time in Florida.

She later married Jesse Cockerham and moved to Des Moines where she worked briefly at Woltz Studio as a portrait painter. Bette was very active in her church and had a beautiful singing voice. She and her husband had a nursing home ministry for years in both Iowa and during the summer in Minnesota. After Jesse retired they became snowbirds in the valley of Texas and continued the nursing home ministry for a short time.

Bette was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Jesse and her two brothers, Delmar and Paul Grosvenor and twin sisters, Neala and Nadine Grosvenor.

Bette was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother as well as a friend to all. She is survived by her two sons, David (Mildred) Hunter of Ackworth, Iowa and Gary (Linda) Hunter of Copley, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Shelly Holsinger of Ackworth, IA, Jeffrey Hunter of Telford, PA, Jerry Hunter of Dallas, IA, Matt Hunter of Copely, OH, Megan Conrad of Copely, OH, Kenneth Cockerham of Des Moines, Heather Cockerham of Des Moines, Elizabeth Cockerham of Des Moines (deceased) and 20 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa- Kavanagh House.
