Robert (Bob) Ray Brown, 74, passed away August 3, 2010 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center after battling 4 different types of cancer over the past eleven years. He was lovingly surrounded by his family. Bob was born in Iowa City to Harold and Vera Brown and attended schools in Des Moines, Iowa.

Bob joined the Army National Guard in 1954 and later transferred to the Army Reserve. After serving in the military for 34 years he retired in 1987. Bob worked as a US Postal Clerk at various stations in the Des Moines area for 34 years and retired in 1993. He enjoyed reading, traveling, and entering contests where he won numerous prizes.

Bob is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara Brown, his two daughters, Debbie (Tom) Allen Jr., of Des Moines and Mary (Alan) Burnett of New Virginia, 4 granddaughters, 1 grandson, 4 great granddaughters, 6 great grandsons, his brother, Harold “Sonny” (Jean) Brown Jr., several nieces and nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, a sister and 3 brothers.

The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at Powell 3 for their compassionate care during Robert’s recent stay.

Visitation will be held at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street from 6 to 8pm Thursday. The funeral will be held on Friday at 1:00 pm at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery on 19th and Ashworth Street in West Des Moines. The family request that you dress casual.

The family suggest that memorials be given to the family for future consideration.
