Mr. Reynold “R.J.” Nichols, 92, passed away July 9, 2010 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.

Mr. Nichols was born February 14, 1918 in Mound Bayou, MS to Joe Nichols and Mary Ann Craig. He moved to Des Moines in 1940, enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944 at Camp Dodge and served in the South Pacific during WWII. Mr. Nichols retired from the V.A. Hospital in 1984 after 35 years of service as a supply clerk and had also worked as a Red Cap for the Des Moines International Airport. He was an active member of LADOS and very much enjoyed their activities and monthly meetings held at Plymouth Congregational Church. He was also a member of Burns United Methodist Church and enjoyed traveling, photography and volunteering at the Southside Senior Citizens Center. Mr. Nichols was looking forward to the Freedom Flight to Washington, D.C. which he was scheduled to take on August 16th.

Mr. Nichols is survived by his brother, Vernon Nichols; and many beloved family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Nelsine Simpson Nichols.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 16, 2010 at Burns United Methodist Church, 811 Crocker Street, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
