Kenneth C. Dechant age 78, of West Des Moines, IA passed away at Mercy Hospital July 9, 2010.
Ken honorably served his country as a member of the Iowa Air Guard during the Korean War. He retired as owner of Dechant-Middendorf Insurance and Director of IMT Insurance Co. of Des Moines, IA. He was a member of West Gate Adelphic Lodge #509, High Twelve Club, Optimist Club of Gulf Breeze, FL and Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Sally, and was the proud father of daughters, Laura Ulz (David) of Humble, TX and Paula Robison of San Diego, CA; stepdaughters, Caryll Schultz (John) of Leawood, KS and Chris Goodman (Mark) of Littleton, CO; grandchildren, Joe and Megan Schultz and Drew and Clara Goodman. He is also survived by his brother, Jim Dechant (Judy) of Kansas City, MO; sisters, Joan Engel (Larry) of Grafton, WI, Arlene Spaw (Don) of Des Moines, IA, and Fran Scantling of Spring, TX, as well as many wonderful friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wendelin and Dorothy Dechant and grandson, Thomas Schultz.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Pkwy, West Des Moines.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the Batten Disease Support and Research Association,

Our heartfelt sympathy to Sally and Ken's family. He was always so pleased and proud of his family. Ken had a big smile and a twinkle in his eye when he spoke of Sally and Laura. We are unable to make the service due to our lunch time business but you will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Sally and family,
I send my condolences on the passing of Ken. I keep fond memories of working with him in your Urbandale lawn. He was the kindest of mentors in this humid Iowa labor. I will hold him and his familyin my heart on this sad occasion.

Dear Sally, Laura, Paula, Caryll and Chris,
May I extend my sympathies in the loss of Ken. He was a father figure, a business mentor and a Christian leader to me and holds a valuable place in my life history.

Sally: We both were so saddened this morning to read about Ken's death. The last I knew you two had built a house in Florida and had moved there.
We are so very sorry for your loss. I had some really good times at your house for dinner after I retired from Capital City Bank. I remember when you and Ken were married and all the good times we all shared with our association with Capital City.
