Irma Christine Hining Gardner, 90, passed away July 7, 2010.

Irma was born January 12, 1920 in Floris, IA to Elmer and Inez Hining. She graduated Valedictorian in 1938 from Eldon High School in Eldon, IA. Following graduation, she taught country school near Floris from 1938 to 1943. During WWII, she was a train dispatcher and telegrapher for Burlington Railroad. At the age of 40 she went back to college to obtain her teaching degree and taught public school in Council Bluffs. In 1968, she moved to Pleasant Hill and was a 4th grade teacher in Altoona until 1987. Irma was a member of the Iowa State Teacher’s Association, Prime Timers Senior Group in Pleasant Hill and Rising Sun Church of Christ. She was an expert seamstress, loved to spend time with her family and in her later years, became an avid genealogist.

She is survived by her children, Carol Lee, Keith Gardner and Joyce Williams; grandchildren, Kimberly Alderman and Jason Chittenden; great-granddaughter, Amelia; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William A. Gardner; and brothers, Hollis and Verdus Hining.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, followed by burial at Rising Sun Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.
