John Whitaker

John C. Whitaker, 78 years old, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2010.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Virginia and his children, Tim Whitaker (Kathy), Susan (Michael) Klus and Stacy (David) Graves and his seven grandchildren, Brandan Thompson, Breanna Whitaker, Katie Klus, Maegan Klus, Derek Klus, Chelsea Sanders and Zachary Sanders.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 21, 2010 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at the Bondurant Federated Church in Bondurant. Burial will be at Franklin Township Cemetery in rural Mitchellville.

John was born at Ivy, Iowa to Harold and Blanche Whitaker. In the last 20 years he lived at rural Mitchellville. He was one of five children of whom a sister, Mary Gilham of Des Moines and a brother, Marvin Dale Whitaker of Ohio survive.

John was an entrepreneur at heart and owned more than one business throughout his life, but he was working at Prairie Meadows when he had his heart attack. His wife and children are overwhelmed by the large number of wonderful people who have visited or called on him in the hospital and at Taylor House. We appreciated the memories and kindness they shared with us. We are grateful to the kindness from everyone at Taylor House who made it possible for us to be close to him these last days.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Bondurant Federated Church.
