Hector W. Cavallin, MD, 74, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2010 at the Bright-Kavanaugh Hospice center in the presence of his family and loved ones after succumbing to a battle with cancer.

Born in Argentina in 1935, he received his medical degree in 1957 from the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba in Cordoba, Argentina. He subsequently came to the United States to study psychiatry at the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, KS. After completing his residency in 1962, he was appointed the Medical Director of the Outpatient Clinic of Topeka State Hospital in Topeka, KS and was appointed to the staff at the Menninger School to teach psychiatry. Hector was named Teacher of the Year by the Menninger residents in 1974 and later joined the clinical staff of the Menninger Hospital where he practiced until 1978. Then, together with his wife Barbara, a clinical psychologist, he entered private practice in Des Moines, IA. After maintaining a successful medical practice for over 28 years, Hector retired in 2006 to spend more time with his wife and family.

Hector is survived by his wife Barbara, his son Geffrey (a physician), his son Kevin (a biologist), his daughter-in-law Sue, and his grandsons Jason and Ian.
In keeping with his wishes, Hector was cremated. A memorial service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church at 10395 University Avenue in Clive, IA at 5:00 PM on Sunday, June 13, 2010.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in Hector’s name to the Bright-Kavanaugh House.
