David “Bowdie” A. Johnston, 44, died on Friday June 4, 2010 at Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House after a courageous four year battle with ALS. A Celebration of Dave’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1701 8th St. SW, Altoona. A visitation will be held 5-8 p.m. Monday at the church.
Dave was born December 22, 1965 to Johnny and Cheryl Johnston. He was a resident of Mitchellville and graduated from SE Polk High School. He worked 17 years for the Maytag Corporation in Newton and Galesburg and most recently at Jacobson Warehouse Co. in Des Moines. While living in Galesburg, Dave met and married Melanie Bradford. Dave was a member of Lutheran Church of the Cross and for many years was a volunteer for the Mitchellville Fire and Rescue Department.
Dave was an avid hunter and fisherman, who loved his annual fishing trips to Canada. He also loved cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes and rooting on the Chicago Cubs. However, the true passions in Dave’s life included good food, a cold beverage, and time with family and friends.
Dave is survived by his wife, Melanie (Bradford) Johnston; daughter, Chelsea Johnston; parents, Johnny and Cheryl Johnston; sister, Sue (LaBrent) Lawler; nephew, Cameron Lawler; niece, Mikaela Lawler; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and beloved friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the ALS Association of Iowa or Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House.

I am a cousin of Sharla and I am truly sorry to hear of your loss. He will be missed. I wanted to add a few of the things I remember about Dave. He was always trying to get some type of game going at the family functions and the first time I went pheasant hunting was with Dave. What fun.

I had the pleasure of working, playing softball, sharing laughs, and a few cold ones with Dave during his years at Maytag, and Donna was his hairstylist for awhile. We both thought the world of Dave, and he indeed will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with family and friends.

We had the pleasure of knowing Dave for many years and the opportunity of spending a week in the summer with him. He loved the outdoors and fishing, coming up to Canada to Eagle Lake Sportsmen's Lodge with his family and friends. We are so grateful that Dave was able to make and fulfill his wish for one more trip to Canada. He will be greatly missed, as he was such a wonderful, caring, loving soul with a big smile on his face all of the time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. We love you, Dave.

I had the pleasure of working for, and with, Dave during my years at Maytag. He was a great boss and human being in every way and will be sorely missed by all. Dave always had a smile for everyone. I remember sharing fishing stories with Dave as my husband, also, was an avid hunter and fisherman. Please accept my sincere expression of sorrow at your loss.
