Michael Smith

After a long courageous battle with ALS-Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Mike has gone home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on May 20, 2010.

Mike worked for Smart Industries for 14 years as Vice President of Sales. He traveled all over the world, selling crane games. He loved his job and it broke his heart when the disease forced him to give it up. Before highlighting his career with Smart Industries he served in the Marines for four years and worked as a prison guard in Newton, IA.

Mike was an avid fisherman. He loved catching fish, going on long car rides and his three dogs – Shu, Tilly and Chronic. He had a wonderful time teasing the grandchildren and they loved his playful, ornery ways. He also enjoyed animals, nature and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn Grandstaff of Reasnor, IA and his father, Thomas Smith of Iowa City, IA.

He leaves behind the love of his life, his wife of 20 years, Edna Smith. She will miss him dearly.

His children, Amanda Easley (Brian Smith), Melina Strayhorn (Brandon Brokofsky), Jerica (Terry) Cooper, Robert Strayhorn (Stephani Sherman), Emerson Strayhorn, Heidi (Chris) Reid, and Annette Smith.

His siblings, Kathi (Dale) Harris of Des Moines, IA, James Smith of Iowa City, IA, Sandy Malone of Florence, AL, Barb (Dennis) Slater of Louisville, KY, Tony (Dee) Smith of Jerseyville, IL, Heidi (Joe) Shultz of Louisville, KY, Kevin Grandstaff of Des Moines, IA and Donnie Grandstaff. Mike also has 11 grandchildren, one great grandchild and much more family.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at Heritage Assembly of God, 5051 NE 5th Street, Des Moines with burial to follow at Pine Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit with family from 9:00 am until services at 11:00 am.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the family to help with expenses at P.O. Box 16011, Des Moines, IA 50317.
