Service Details

Marie, born January 16, 1916, died peacefully at Scottish Rite Park, Des Moines, after a short illness. Marie was the last remaining survivor of nine children born and raised on the Hulderson family farm near Huxley, Iowa. Her grandparents were members of a large Norwegian community which migrated to central Iowa beginning in 1855. For many years, community life centered on the Palestine and Fjeldberg Lutheran Churches in the area, where her parents and grandparents are buried.

Marie attended Alleman High School where as center she anchored the girls’ basketball team. In her junior year the team played in the Iowa girls Regional basketball Tournament then held at the Drake Field house, and in her senior year, 1932, the Alleman team was semi-finalist in the State Tournament. There were ten students in her graduating class.

After attending Iowa Business School, Marie joined the Central National Bank in Des Moines-now Bank of America-where she later headed its Mortgage Loan Department prior to her retirement. Marie married her loving husband, John Peebles, in 1961. Her relationship with John brought about the happiest time of her life. When John died in 1991, Marie moved to an apartment at Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines, where she remained an active participant until her recent illness. Marie, an avid bowler, golfer and bridge player, was also supportive of community affairs, serving as member and past President of the Chamber Alliance; member and past President of Hawkeye Chapter, Professional Secretaries International; member, Polk county Pioneer Club; member, Benevolent Patriotic Order of Does, Drove #25, and member of St. John’s Lutheran Church since 1936. Marie in recent years served in good spirits as the designated Matriarch of the Hulderson extended family during informal reunions.

Marie was preceded in death by her brother, Marks Hulderson; and seven sisters, Carrie Antill, Oma Fraker, Viola Hughes, Ruth Oliver, Amelia Thompson, Dorothy Tomlinson, and Annette Warden; and is survived by many nephews and nieces and their descendants.

Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, 1 NE 60th Avenue, Des Moines, where she will be buried next to her husband, John. Contributions in her memory may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 600 6th Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50309.
