Service Details

Jerry L. Shumway, 71, died Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at his home surrounded by his family following a 4 ½ year battle with lung cancer. Celebration of life services will be held 10:00 A.M. Thursday, March 8th at Southtown Funeral Home. Private family burial of cremated remains will be in Avon cemetery at a later date. A memorial visitation will be held 5-7 P.M. Wednesday, March 7th at the funeral home.
Jerry graduated from Des Moines Lincoln High School in 1953, and attended Drake University. He married Phyllis, the love of his life, in 1956. Jerry spent his working years in sales, owning and operating his own business, “Shumway & Associates” as a Manufacturer’s Representative of electrical equipment for 28 years. Over his lifetime he traveled extensively worldwide and enjoyed wintering in Florida. He loved both fresh and saltwater fishing. He was a consistent caregiver of birds particularly his love for the purple martins. Many memories were made with his passion for boating, camping and taking family vacations. He enjoyed meeting and talking with people and enjoyed capturing photos of his family and travels, expanding his computer knowledge and grilling for friends and family. His love for his family is unending and unconditional. He was a member of Fort Des Moines United Methodist Church, South Gate Masonic Lodge #657, Scottish Rite and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Phyllis; his daughter, Brenda Levis (Scott) and granddaughters Lauren and Allison; his son, Michael (LeeAnn) and granddaughters Brianna and Alexandra “Lexi” all of West Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Florence.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to John Stoddard Cancer Center or Hospice of Central Iowa. Our special thanks to Dr. Westberg, his nurse, Jan and staff at John Stoddard and nurses from Hospice.
