Burton Franklin Newman, 83, passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at his home. He was born June 26, 1926 to Clayton and Odessa Newman in Des Moines. He lived in the Mitchellville area all his life and graduated from Mitchellville High School in 1944. He married Eunice Tate on September 25, 1946 and entered the US Army on October 1, 1946. He served overseas stationed in South Korea until March 1948.
Burton was a farmer and retired from Ford Motor Company as a welder. He and his wife enjoyed dancing, camping, and vacations with their children. Burton’s hobbies were cars, motorcycles, gardening, mowing the yard, and his German Shepherds.
Burton is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eunice; daughters, Kathleen (Ken) Heaberlin of Rogers, AR and Colleen (Mike) Wagner of Ventura, IA; son, Mark (Reneé) Newman of West Des Moines; brother, David (Lillian) Newman; sisters, Gretchen Rice of Denver, CO and Marjorie (Harold) Magg of Spirit Lake; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and beloved friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Gilbert Newman; and sister, Jean Newman.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Santiago United Methodist Church, 8050 NE 109th Street, Mitchellville, with interment at Mitchellville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, May 7, 2010 at Hamilton’s Mitchellville Funeral Home, 303 Center Avenue South, Mitchellville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Iowa Health Hospice, 11333 Aurora Avenue, Urbandale, IA 50322, in loving memory of Burton.

I will never forget the time when I was asked to babysit all of Uncle Burt's & Aunt Eunice's kids (my cousins) at their farm. I was only a kid myself, but tried to act older of course. There was a bad rain storm that night and I remember how the family dog (a big German Shepherd) ran under the kitchen table and cried the whole time the storm was happening. I know that Uncle Burt loved that dog so much, and I am sure the feelings were mutual.
Perhaps they had many animals since those many years ago, but I am sure they were all favorites of Uncle Burt!
I am sure that he is now in Heaven with his sweet German Shepherd and all of his family that preceded his death. He will be looking down watching over all of his wonderful family forever, until they are able to be with him again in Heaven! God Bless them all!

I just got word this morning that my Uncle Burt passed away... He had a gentle soul and an adventuresome spirit. I had the pleasure of seeing him and my Aunt Eunice last summer. I will always remember Uncle Burt wearing his cowboy shirt, belt buckle and boots. He was the only true Iowa farmer in our family... Quite an honor in my book. I love you man...

My sympathy to you on the loss of Burt. I am the son of Warren Buck,of Lacona; also a welder at Ford. He passed in August of 2003. Once in a while, I will come across other folks from Ford. In fact I visited with one a couple of months ago.
Remember the "Ford picnic" at the old Riverpark?

Dear Newman family,
I am so sorry to hear of Burt's passing. I will never forget all of the years we spent together as farm neigbors. I thought a great deal of Burt. He was very hard working family man. You are all in my thoughts.
