Burton Franklin Newman, 83, passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at his home. He was born June 26, 1926 to Clayton and Odessa Newman in Des Moines. He lived in the Mitchellville area all his life and graduated from Mitchellville High School in 1944. He married Eunice Tate on September 25, 1946 and entered the US Army on October 1, 1946. He served overseas stationed in South Korea until March 1948.

Burton was a farmer and retired from Ford Motor Company as a welder. He and his wife enjoyed dancing, camping, and vacations with their children. Burton’s hobbies were cars, motorcycles, gardening, mowing the yard, and his German Shepherds.

Burton is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eunice; daughters, Kathleen (Ken) Heaberlin of Rogers, AR and Colleen (Mike) Wagner of Ventura, IA; son, Mark (Reneé) Newman of West Des Moines; brother, David (Lillian) Newman; sisters, Gretchen Rice of Denver, CO and Marjorie (Harold) Magg of Spirit Lake; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and beloved friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Gilbert Newman; and sister, Jean Newman.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Santiago United Methodist Church, 8050 NE 109th Street, Mitchellville, with interment at Mitchellville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, May 7, 2010 at Hamilton’s Mitchellville Funeral Home, 303 Center Avenue South, Mitchellville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Iowa Health Hospice, 11333 Aurora Avenue, Urbandale, IA 50322, in loving memory of Burton.
