Richard C. Bruce passed away May 2, 2010 after enduring years of suffering from esophageal cancer. He fought a courageous battle for 20 years with his family and friends by his side.

Richard graduated from Tech High School’s D.E.C.A. Retailing Program. He worked at Younkers for 30 years, where he started in sporting goods under the guidance of Bob “Pappy” Carlson. Richard went on to become a truck driver for Younkers in their special delivery department and later a furniture warehouse driver. He enjoyed working at Younkers, fishing, playing cards and helping friends and neighbors.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Bruce; mother, Vernus Thirstine Bruce; sister, Charlotte Parkey; brother, Charles Bruce; aunts, Ms. Corrine Carter, Mrs. Louise Ware and Mrs. Harriett Bruce; and uncles, Leon, Ralph, and Nevin Bruce. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Bruce; children, Pamela Bruce of Minneapolis, Richard C. Bruce, II of Illinois, Paul A. (Tracey) Bruce and Melissa Bruce, both of Des Moines; brothers, Lonnie and George Bruce; and a host of nieces, nephews and grandchildren all of whom he loved dearly. He attended their school and sporting events and enjoyed their canny stories for various behaviors.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 7, 2010 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Gregory Berry, Penn Ave. Medical Center, Lutheran Hospital Staff and friends who provided them with prayer and endless support during Richard’s illness.
