Gary Wayne Brown, 55 of Des Moines was called home May 1, 2010 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston following a brief illness. A celebration of his life will be 7 PM Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Prairie Meadows Casino in The Meadow B Room. A private visitation and burial occurred before the celebration for his family.
Gary was born April 20th, 1955 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to William V. Brown and Willa Mae (Mattison) Brown. He was a gifted cook and enjoyed creating wonderful meals for his family and friends who will miss those times with him.
Along with his mother, survivors include his immediate family and closest friends, Bruce Hunter and Betty Brim-Hunter; his two dogs Pearl Mae and Maxwell Theodore; brothers, Vernon Brown and Vincent Brown of Las Vegas, Victor (Sandy) Brown and Jason (Jody) Brown both of Cedar Rapids; brother-in-law Lance Moreland and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his father William V. Brown and sister, Vanessa O. Moreland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Foundation, Feed the Children, Make a Wish Foundation or the Animal Rescue League.

My daughter, Kim Tu, told me of Gary's passing - I'm so very sorry. I had only met him once but I felt like I knew him through Kim. I know he will be missed a lot by her and Bruce and Betty. He will remain in your hearts and memories.

I speak for our family of 5 when I say how greatful I am that we all got to be a part of Garys life. He was a true friend and a gentle soul. He was loved by many, and will be missed by us all.

How rapid life moves, we often take for granted the span of a year, month, or even seconds. We tend to think of ourselves and others as the youthful vibrant individuals we remember or want to be. With each loss of a loved one or friend we are, or should be reminded how precious our remaining time should be. When I think of Gary, I think of heart warming smiles, Job's patience, and that wonderful voice he possessed in both speech and song. I didn't see or talk to him much, and sadly the last time I had that oppurtunity was at Vanessa's passing.
Although life had thrown him curves, it was clear that he remained the Gary I remember. Smiling, steadfast, and easy to entreat. Those will remain my memories, and I will endeavor to use them as a template to live whatever life God will grant me.
My deepest condolences to all of you, and I know I'm preaching to the chior when I say that God is not the author of confusion, and he makes no mistakes.

It was my honor over the past couple of years to be able to get to know Gary. He was a great friend and a tribute to courage. In my many conversations and visits with Gary he always left my day brighter. I am sad about the loss but I celebrate his life and the joy he brought to many! It has been my honor to call him my friend. Thank you Gary for your inspiration - you will be missed.
