Service Details

Polly King, 80, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2010 in West Des Moines, Iowa after a short illness. She moved to Iowa 5 years ago in order to live closer to her daughter after living in Kirkwood, NY for over 40 years. She was preceded in death by Merle C. King, her husband of 49 years, in 2004.

Polly is survived by her daughter, Linda (Ted) Stetson of West Des Moines, IA; her son, Jeffrey (Linda) King of Binghamton, NY; grandchildren, Christopher, Julia, Audrey and Joseph King, Shelby and Alex Stetson; her brother, Harry Pollard; and many nieces and nephews.

Polly was born the youngest of four children in Mineola, NY on September 3, 1929 in the first generation of her family to be born in America after emigrating from England. She graduated from Greene High School in Greene, NY in 1947. She worked for many years as a secretary in several law practices based in Binghamton, NY. A few of Polly’s lifelong interests and pleasures were antique collecting, playing cards with friends, Frank Sinatra’s music, and in later years bowling in a league with friends at Sunset Lanes and enjoying her membership in the Elk’s Lodge in Kirkwood. Her children have many abiding memories of her love for them, including her excitedly clapping so hard at her son’s schooldays baseball games that she broke blood vessels in her hands. Her presence in their lives will be greatly missed.

Polly has been cremated and a memorial service for the family will be held at a later date in New York. Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA is handling arrangements.
