Dorothy L. Zeis

Dorothy Louise Zeis, 98, was born July 8, 1911 in Vergennes, Illinois, the daughter of Walter and Catherine (Coxon) Serth. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Saturday, April 10, 2010, at Calvin Community. Cremation has occurred and private family services are planned for a later date. Burial will take place at Glendale Cemetery following.

In her younger years, Dorothy liked to play golf. She also enjoyed needlepoint, reading and cooking. Dorothy was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Des Moines. During her life she volunteered in various church activities, and more recently volunteered at Jordan House Historical Society in West Des Moines.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Robert (Diane) Zeis; son-in-law, Gordon Smith; her grandchildren, Lynn Colvin, Michael Greth, Rick Greth, Charles Greth, Kim Maskell, Thomas Maskell, Sara Moran, Andrew Smith, Alex Smith, Rob Zeis and Jennifer Zeis; and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John R. Zeis, Sr.; son, John Zeis, Jr.; and her daughters, Karen J. Smith and Jacqueline Z. Maskell.

The family wishes to express our deep appreciation for the love and care given her over the past several years while she was a resident at Calvin Community in Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in loving memory of Dorothy. Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway is handling arrangements.
