Opal Lee (Knowlton) Buck, 82, passed away Thursday, April 8, 2010 at the Carlisle Care Center.

Opal was born December 15, 1927 in San Antonio, TX the daughter of John and Eula (Goodwin) Knowlton. She graduated from Edison High School. On May 28, 1946 she was married to William Miles Buck III in San Antonio. Together they had four children. Opal was baptized at Northside Baptist Church on West Ave in San Antonio. She worked for many years as a supervisor at the Western Union in San Antonio, taking wires from and for the many soldiers arriving and departing on the troop trains. She continued to reside in San Antonio until moving to Carlisle in 2004.

Opal loved animals and rode her horse to Franklin Elementary School where she hitched it to the hitching post in front of the school until school let out. She also loved driving sports convertibles, especially red ones. Opal loved the outdoors, had a green thumb and was known as the fun loving, sometimes cantankerous but always colorful “Mama” at the Care Center.

Opal is survived by her her children, Lucille (Terry) Hardy, Carlisle, Iowa; Paul (Cindy) Buck, North Judson, Indiana; Mary (Bob) Nichols, Grapevine, Pennsylvania; John (April) Buck, Dolores, Colorado; and Jack Buck, San Antonio, Texas; one brother and three sisters, Virgil (Ida) Knowlton, Lillian Snowden, Lorraine Beavers, and Patricia (Bob) Morgan, all who live in the San Antonio area. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 14 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers (John, Herbert and George Knowlton), 1 child, 2 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, April 10 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, funeral at 1:00 pm. Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery.
