Merle "Slim" Warren

Merle “Slim” Warren passed away Saturday, March 27, 2010 at his home at the age of 92. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. in Des Moines, with burial at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes. Visitation will be 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2010, also at the funeral home.

Merle was born March 9, 1918 to Lowery and Hazel Warren in Glidden, Iowa. He served three years in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a prisoner of war in France before returning home in 1945. Slim worked for 30 years for Firestone Tire and Rubber Co., retiring in 1979. He was a member of the United Rubber Workers Union Local 310.

Merle is survived by his wife of 70 years, Louise; four children: Jackie (Dennis) Smith, Gary (Penni), Dennis (Joyce), and Larry (Cherie); and many grandchildren; a sister, Rosemary Smeltzer of Canton, N.C., and a brother, Glen Dillavou of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Judy Marvin in 2004, and his grandson, Ronald C. Babb, Jr.
