Gertrude Lucile Martin

Gertrude Martin, 87, passed away at Iowa Methodist Hospital on March 17, 2010.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 22, 2010 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home with burial following at Sunset Cemetery. A visitation will be Sunday, 5-7 pm at the funeral home.

Gertrude was born May 31, 1922 in Des Moines at 1020 Kirkwood, (the home her father built) to Edgar and Jennett Bishop. She attended Maple Grove Elementary and Lincoln High School. Along with her brother, William “Bill” and sister, Josephine “Josie”, she grew up with several cousins, Nellie, Edith, Jeannett, Minnie, and Melville Marsh, whom her parents were guardians for. Together they all were considered brothers and sisters.

In 1936 she met Floyd D. Martin Sr. and was married on December 20, 1941 by the Rev. Dewitt White; together they raised 5 children in Des Moines. Gertrude was a homemaker and helped other families by running child care out of her home. She is a member of the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She and her husband Floyd were sealed in the Chicago Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

She is survived by her children, Floyd Jr., Steve (Shanda), Brad, Sandy (Rick) Formaro and Trudy Harvey; grandchildren, Tammy, Steve Jr., Trevor, Clover, Jacob and Dustin; great grandchildren, Wendy Jo, Matthew, Abby Jo, Haley, Jacob, Colby, Clayton Jr., Josephine, Kara, Nathan, and Layla Jean.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Sr., a granddaughter, Dehlia, a great granddaughter, Isabelle and a brother, William, and sister, Josephine.
