Virginia May (Ginnie) Denman, 82, passed away on March 11, 2010 at the Kavanaugh House.

Ginnie was born May 2, 1927 in Des Moines to Mitchell and Elva (Gardner) Northrop. She lived in Des Moines all of her life, graduated from Roosevelt High School and attended Iowa State University. Ginnie was a member of Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, where she served as one of the first female Deaconesses. She also belonged to P.E.O., Gamma Phi Beta and was active in Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). In addition to her church activities, Ginnie participated in ministries that reached out to others, including her volunteer efforts with several agencies which helped underprivileged children and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant grandson.

Ginnie will be remembered as a devoted and loving mother and grandmother, always willing to help with a tender hand and wise and gentle guidance.

She is survived by her brother, Charles Northrop of Des Moines. She also leaves behind her children, Jesse (Nena) Denman of Earlham, Julia (Bob) Culbertson of Des Moines, Catherine Ferguson (Charlie Thyberg) of Reno, Nevada (Des Moines), Gary Denman (Karen Diehl) of Greeley, Colorado, and James (Sherry) Denman of Urbandale. Grandma Ginnie also leaves behind 15 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; nephew, Berkeley Northrop (Christy); 2 great nieces; numerous close friends and a large extended family.

A Memorial Service will be held at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, 4126 Ingersoll Avenue, on Wednesday, March 24th at 11:00 a.m. Friends are encouraged to visit with Ginnie’s family prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church.

Ginnie requested that Memorial gifts be directed to Plymouth Church or P.E.O.
