Service Details

A gift God put on this earth in 1912 has gone to Heaven, and she will be there forever with Jesus.
Alice Margaret Maly, a gentle lady with a loving heart, left us Feb. 20, 2007. Alice graced this world for nearly 95 years, and she will be missed greatly by her family and her many friends.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, of which she was a member, at 5625 Franklin Avenue in Des Moines. A one-hour visitation will be held before the service. Burial will be at Sisley Grove Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Alice was born Feb. 24, 1912 in Cedar Rapids, and spent most of her life there. She moved to West Des Moines 13 years ago to be closer to her family.
Indeed, her family was the center of her universe. Those who knew Alice well will recall that her sons, their wives, her grandchildren, their spouses and her great-grandchildren were paramount.
One day a couple of years ago, when she sensed her time on earth was growing shorter, she used the beautiful penmanship that was her trademark to write some of the things she wanted included in her obituary.
She mentioned that she was a graduate of Grant High School in Cedar Rapids, as well as the Cedar Rapids Business College. She did secretarial work for 20 years at the Cedar Rapids Block Company and for 11 years at Pal Engineering in Cedar Rapids.
Alice was proud that she was a longtime member of the American Business Women's Association.
"I have five adorable grandchildren and 10 adorable great-grandchildren,” she wrote. “Among my other interests were crocheting, crafts and ceramics.”
Alice Margaret Maly and Julius William Maly were the parents of two sons, Ronald Wesley Maly and Philip Roger Maly. Phil preceded his mother in death in 1993. Julius Maly died in 1978. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Mary and John Usher, and a brother, Charles Usher.
In addition to her son, Ron Maly, and his wife, Maxine, Alice is survived by grandchildren Lonn Maly ( Julie), Mark Maly (Polly), Kevin Maly (Donna), Lance Maly (Maureen) and Michelle Hanson (Carter).
Her great-grandchildren are Jerika and Shelby Maly, Cole and Claire Maly, Nathan and Megan Maly, Kaitlin and Luke Maly, and Sophie and Elsa Hanson.
Among Alice’s other survivors are Emrie Ealy, a niece, and Martha Kristan, a sister-in-law.
Memorials may be given to Mt. Olive Lutheran School, 5625 Franklin Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50310.
