Lorraine L. Jones

Lorraine Jones, 85, died Thursday, February 19, 2010 at the Ramsey Home. A service will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, with burial at Elm Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Lorraine was born September 18, 1924 to Milton and Edna Simpson Jones in Des Moines on the family farm where the Des Moines Airport is now located. She graduated from Waukee High School in 1942 and immediately began her career at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. Lorraine retired from the telephone company in 1982 after 39½ years of service working in various areas including the Chief Engineering Department.

After retirement, she volunteered at the Iowa Historical Building Gift Shop, the Planned Parenthood Book Sale, the Festival of Trees, and the Animal Protection Society of Iowa, which she helped found. She was also involved in the Telephone Pioneer Club. She loved all dogs, especially Dachshunds, which she had throughout her life. Lorraine had a strong belief in spaying and neutering pets and was an advocate for all animals.

Lorraine is survived by many cousins and beloved friends, including her dear friend, Nelda Knapp from the Animal Protection Society.
