Walter Sonnenburg, 87, was born August 17, 1922 in Lovilla, Iowa, the son of Henry and Marguerite (Oyres) Sonnenburg. He passed away Friday, February 12, 2010, at his home. Cremation has occurred and private family burial will take place at a later date.
Walter proudly served his country as a Coast Guard World War II veteran, bravely touring in both the Pacific and European Theatres.
Walter is survived by his daughter, Kathy (Steve) Michelson of Polk City; son, Steven (Marne) Sonnenburg of Johnston; grandchildren, Michelle (Steve) Zamzow of Grimes, and Shaun (Stephanie) Sonnenburg of California and Janelle Sonnenburg of Des Moines; great-grandchildren, Andrew Zamzow, Samantha Zamzow and Gage Hudson and his sister, Pauline Jobusch. Also surviving is his faithful cat, Garfield. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Irene Sonnenburg; his parents and an infant sister.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League in loving memory of Walter.
Arrangements are being handled by Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens.

Kathy, Steve, and family,
I was so sorry to hear about Walter when Mom and Dad called. We went down on Sunday to have lunch with them and they spent quite some time telling us stories of their early years with Walter and Irene. It was interesting to hear the stories and must admit it jogged my memories of us living next to you guys, playing in the back yard, the Grimes school and then of course Johnston High School.
I had the chance to visit Irene in the home before she passed away, but am sorry to say I have not seen Walter for some time.
My memories of him have always been very good with his large smile, friendliness whenever I did see him.
I am sure he will be missed by the two of you, you children, grandchildren, and great grand kids.
I will wait to hear from Mom and Dad when and if services take place later in the spring. If not, please accept my condolences, fond memories and well wishes for you and your families.
