Edwin "Tim" Elliot, 92, passed away at his home in West Des Moines on February 10, 2010. The body was cremated and a private family service will be held at a later date.

Tim was born in Philadelphia on January 26, 1918, the son of Edwin and Mary Timanus Elliot. Following graduation from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he was an avid, lifelong student earning credentials in law, aviation, boating, real estate and emergency medical response. During World War II he studied Japanese at the U.S. Military Intelligence Service Language School.

His early career as a broadcast journalist included interviews with Dwight Eisenhower, Josip Broz Tito, Charles de Gaulle, David Ben-Gurion and other world leaders. In the 1950s and 1960s he founded and operated radio stations in Akron, Ohio, Providence, R.I., and Norfolk, Va. Tim¹s love for books, writing and history culminated in the authorship of four novels.

In Iowa, Tim was a business owner and commercial real estate broker. He served as President of the American Red Cross Central Iowa Chapter, and the Science Center of Iowa, and was the Kofu, Japan, City Chair of the Greater Des Moines Sister City Commission. He was a member of the U.S. Power Squadron and Rotary Club of West Des Moines.

Tim is survived by his wife, Catherine Kirk Elliot; daughter, Joyce (Frederick) Lock of Des Moines; son, Edwin T. Elliot, Jr. of Los Angeles; daughter Serelda Elliot of Faber, Va.; son, Rick (Gayle) Ryan of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Catherine (Larry) Fairfield of Laramie, Wyo.; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. His parents and a brother, Richard Elliot, preceded him in death.
