Service Details

Clara Petersen, 86, of Norwalk, went to be with our Heavenly Father February 9, 2010 from Parkinson’s disease and related ailments, at the Urbandale Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 12th at 10 a.m. at the Norwalk United Methodist Church, with burial following at the Norwalk Cemetery. A visitation will be held Thursday, February 11th from 5-7 p.m. at the church.

Clara was born on July 22, 1923 in Corinth, Kentucky to Samuel Guy and Ethel Newton. She was one of four siblings. Clara attended Brean College and then joined the U.S. WAVS during WWII and served from 1943 to 1946. During her time in the service she met the love of her life, Harold L. Petersen whom she married on January 11, 1947 in Kansas. To that union was born Susan Smith, David (Kathy) Petersen, and Rita Windle, all of Norwalk. Clara worked and retired from Preferred Risk Insurance. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, ceramics, cooking, and preserving fresh produce from Harold’s garden. For many years Clara was very active in the Norwalk United Methodist Church. However, her biggest love of all was her family and friends. She was a wonderful and loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Clara loved having her family around her and providing a warm and happy home. She was always there to help and willingly gave of her time and talents.

Among those who will miss her are her children; brother, G. Sam (Dorothy) Newton; nieces and nephews; brother-in-law Chris (Jo) Petersen; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Polly and brother Tommy.
