Service Details
Mary Elizabeth Stuart, 88, was born June 30, 1921 in Carlisle, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Ellen Bender. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Thursday, February 4, 2010 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th St. SW in Altoona with burial to follow at the Altoona Cemetery.
Mary retired in 1983 from Norwest Financial after an enjoyable 43 years of dedicated service.
She is survived by her son, Jack (Mary) Stuart; her granddaughter, Elizabeth Stuart; sister, Audrey Jenkins; brother, William (Joyce) Bender; many nieces, nephews and special friends. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jack and her parents.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, February 8, 2010 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Iconium United Methodist Church in loving memory of Mary.

Hello Jackie, Mary Jo and Elizabeth,
We were so sorry to hear about Mary. Thanks for calling Mom to let her know. It meant alot to her that you called, Jackie. I'm also very sorry we weren't able to come to the visitation this evening. We had made plans to bring Mom and be there but this continued crazy Iowa winter just keeps messing up plans. I feel so bad that you have to deal with nasty weather during these hard days.
We will always have special memories of the Stuart family. You know how much the three Whitehead kids loved to come down and be teased by Jack and pampered by Mary! It was so thoughtful of you to establish a memorial for the church in Iconuim.
We are thinking of you tonight and tomorrow. I do hope you'll be able to come down and see Mom someday here in Indianola. I know she'd be glad to see you.

I worked for Mary for 10 years at Dial Finance and so respected and appreciated having a boss/friend such as Mary. I am so sorry for you loss and want you to know she will never be forgotten. God Bless.

Dear Jack, Mary, Elizabeth and family members,
Our sympathy and prayers are with you as you mourn the loss of your Mother, Grandmother and Sister.
Aunt Mary was a special person; always smiling and pleasant and a woman of extraordinary common sense. She (and of course Uncle Jack) were always a large part of my youth due to the close Stuart family ties.
She was a very giving person. I remember one evening Dad (Gene) had me go up to their door on Cottage Grove and say I was hungry. Mary made fried chicken and all the fixings for us - but we noticed she and Jack were not eating much. Then Dad figured it out - they had already eaten but said nothing and served us as if they hadn't! Also, I believe she had a large part in helping me get my first job with Dial Finance while I was still in College. There are many other wonderful memories.
We were glad we were able to drop by and visit with her last summer when she told us of her illness but she wasn't afraid - she knew where she would spend eternity.
So, while you will miss her greatly, remember "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints" Psalm 116:15
