Susan Mokricky, 40, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston after a courageous battle with cancer. Mass of Celebration will be Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 7075 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines. Visitation will be held Friday, February 5, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines. Burial will be in Jordan Cemetery.
Susan in survived by her husband, Mike; daughter, Anna and son Mason; her parents, Dale and Judy Hilliard of Lakeview, Arkansas; grandmother, Arlyne Lueth of Bull Shoals, Arkansas; father and mother in law, Vic and Donna Mokricky of Waterloo, brother Matt Hilliard of Cedar Rapids, sister in law, Kim Wichert of Omaha, one niece, three nephews, other family members and many friends. Also a special thanks to Tina McMickle who has been very supportive in helping Sue over the last two years.
Susan was born April 24, 1969 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. She graduated from NU High School in Cedar Falls and then to the University of Iowa where she graduated in Elementary Education. She moved to West Des Moines and then married her husband Mike in July of 1993. She started teaching first grade in the fall of 1992 at Western Hills Elementary School in West Des Moines. She then taught fourth grade. Susan was a gifted teacher and touched many lives and families. Her incredible laughter could be heard throughout the building. She will be missed by all.

Mike and family,
While I won't be able to attend services for Susan, know that I am constantly thinking about our neighbors down the street; the other "Mike and Suzy" as your wife pointed out when we first met.
I will continue to remember her smile as she passed our house on her daily walk and our brief conversations when she went by. Please know that we are constantly praying for you and look forward to the day when we can take a walk with Susan on the streets of heaven. Don't every hesitate to ask for anything that we can help you with.

Susan and I started teaching at Western Hills at the same time. We taught
together for only two years. Although we haven't had much contact for a
long time, I will always remember her for her brilliant smile and the tireless
energy she brought to her classroom.
My heart goes out to al of you that she left behind. Please accept my most

Judy, Dale and family,
We are thinking of you and wishing we could be with you to offer our love and support.
We recently learned of Susan's illness and you have all been in our prayers. Though
we have lost touch, we have so many fond memories of the entire Hilliard family.
Our children were great friends, and we watched Susan grow into a beautiful young woman.
It is no surprise to learn that she was a wonderful teacher. She will be so missed.

Dale, Judy, Mike, Matt and family, I just heard this news and it just breaks my heart. I am so sorry for all of you and I hope you know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers! I wish I could be there to help support you guys. Although we have lost touch with each other through these years, I have never forgotten you and have often looked back on a ton of fond memories! You were the BEST neighbors! I keep thinking back to all the one on one basketball games in your driveway Susan and I had! I secretly took all the credit for her being such a sports star! I am glad that she is finally at peace. It sounds like the past couple of years were a struggle. I had no idea any of this was going on. Judy, I wish I could give you a hug!! I'm so sorry! Judy, Dale and family,
Our thoughts and prayers with you in these difficult times. Please know that we would be there, but we are in Southern Texas as Arnie retired last week. I had the honor and privilege of teaching with Susan at Western Hills. She was such an awesome example of integrity, caring, and respect. She gracefully touched the lives of her students and colleagues. I will always remember her laughter and the courageous way she lead her life!

I am a friend of Judy Hilliard (Susan's mom). I want to offer my sympathy to the whole family. I hope that the services can be a comfort to you all and be a celebration of Susan's life. Know that people all over are praying for you all - from Maine to Arkansas and I'm sure so much of Iowa. We are with you in Spirit. I am a Middle School Guidance Counselor, so I want to say a special note to Mason and Anna. Do take advantage of people at school and Counselors who are there to help you heal. You deserve all the support. People will reach out to you. Know that you can slowly reach back to express your feelings. Your mom will be with you, forever, in your heart.

Susan had a huge impact on a lot of people and you should be feeling a lot of love from a lot of people today.
