Judith Solem

Judith, (Judy) Solem of Des Moines, died on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. She was born on September 17, 1937 in Massena, Iowa, the daughter of the late Bill and Aldora Gillispie.

Following graduation from Orient High School in 1955, she went on Nurses Training at Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines. Following graduation, she worked for 34 years as a nurse, nurse manager and director of nursing at Blank Children’s Hospital. She loved and served children her entire life. She had 17 foster children. She loved the mountains and spent time every year in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. She was a longtime member of Indianola Heights Christian Church.

A visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 1:00 p.m., on January 22, with lunch and laughter to follow. All will take place at Indianola Heights Christian Church, located at Park Avenue and Southeast 8th Street in Des Moines.

Judy is survived by her sisters, Beverly Pisarik (Linda Chesmore) of Cedar Rapids, Karen Gillispie of Des Moines; her son, Brian Solem and his wife Joan and two grandchildren, Jackson and Julia all of Longmont, Colorado; a nephew, Bart Pisarik, his wife Amy, great niece Megan and great nephew Sean all of Marion, Iowa and niece, Amber Cade and great nephews Avery and Harrison of Madrid, Iowa.

Memorial contributions can be made to Blank Children’s Hospital or Indianola Heights Christian Church.
